Paying for ChatGPT? Check for free usage resets this October

By Thrive · · 4 min read

Extra room to build, experiment and finally finish that project you keep putting off.

If you already pay for ChatGPT and use Codex or ChatGPT Work, there’s a reason to check your allowance this month. OpenAI’s 28-day push includes full usage resets alongside product improvements, giving eligible users more opportunities to get things done.

I only noticed because I’ve been burning through my weekly allowance, yet it reset three times in one week. Naturally, I had questions.

It turns out there’s something useful happening behind those unexpectedly refreshed limits.

What’s happening this month?

OpenAI has committed to delivering a clear improvement relevant to most Codex and Work users each day during the programme, or a full usage reset. Sometimes, users get both. You can follow the announcements in the OpenAI Developer Community’s daily update thread.

The daily series started on 5 October 2026. Counting that as day one puts its 28th day on 1 November 2026.

For people already using these tools, that creates an opportunity to make more progress within their existing subscription.

What’s improved so far?

Alongside the resets, three updates are worth knowing about:

See the daily announcement thread for the speed and Auto-review updates, and OpenAI’s Intelligent UI announcement for the interactive Chat features.

What does a usage reset actually do?

A reset refreshes the allowance it covers, potentially letting you continue before your usual reset date. Your plan’s normal limits still apply afterwards, and eligibility depends on the particular offer and your account.

This promotion concerns Codex and ChatGPT Work, which share a usage allowance. Check that allowance specifically when looking at what you have available.

There are two types of reset to look out for:

OpenAI’s usage guide explains how each type works.

How to check yours

  1. Open the ChatGPT desktop app and go to Settings → Usage.
  2. Check your remaining allowance, reset times and any available saved resets.
  3. If you see “1 reset available” or “Full reset”, check what it covers and when it expires before activating it.

Don’t assume a saved reset lasts until the programme ends. Check its individual expiry date.

Give that extra usage a job

That website you’ve half-built? The business idea you keep coming back to? The repetitive task you’ve been meaning to automate?

Pick one and decide what useful progress would look like.

For your website, that might mean finishing the services page and checking how it looks on a phone. For a business idea, it could mean creating a simple prototype you can show someone for feedback. For a repetitive task, start by explaining the steps you currently follow and asking which parts could be automated.

You don’t need to tackle the entire project in one sitting. A clear, manageable task gives you something concrete to work towards.

My suggestion: finish one useful thing before opening another five projects. I appreciate that this is easier said than done when the ideas start arriving.

This is the kind of thing I’m sharing through Thrive Total Solutions: what’s available, what it means, and how to actually use it in your business or everyday life.

Because the exciting part isn’t watching an allowance refill. It’s what you could do with it.
