AI questions, answered

Getting started

What is generative AI?

Generative AI creates outputs such as text or images from patterns learned during training and the instructions you give it. You might use it to draft an email, explore ideas or explain a topic. A fluent answer is not proof that it is correct.

Do I need to be technical?

No coding is needed for many everyday AI tasks. Start by describing what you want in ordinary language. You can ask for a simpler explanation, give an example or say what needs changing. Learning to ask clearly and check the result matters more than knowing technical terms.

What could I use AI for today?

Choose one small, low-stakes task: turn a rough idea into a to-do list, practise an interview with fictional details, or ask for three ways to explain something you already understand. Start with a task you can judge yourself, then decide whether the result actually helps.

Getting useful answers

What is a prompt?

A prompt is the instruction or information you give an AI tool. Include your goal, useful background and the format you want. For example: “Help me plan a 30-minute revision session on percentages. I am a beginner. Give me three activities and leave time to check my answers.”

Why does the answer feel generic?

The tool may be missing your audience, purpose or constraints. Explain who the answer is for, what you want it to achieve and what to avoid. Instead of “write a post”, try “draft a short, friendly post for first-time business owners about organising their week; include one practical example”.

What if the first answer is wrong or unhelpful?

Treat it as a draft. Point to the specific issue: “This assumes I have a team; I work alone”, or “Explain the second step with an example”. Ask it to identify missing information. A revision can improve the answer, but it still needs your review.

Can AI make up facts and sources?

Yes. It can produce plausible claims, quotations or references that are wrong or do not exist. Open sources yourself, check that they support the claim and check their dates. Recalculate important numbers. Asking “Are you sure?” is not independent verification.

Does AI always know what is happening now?

No. Some tools can retrieve current information; others may rely on older knowledge. Ask for dated sources and open them yourself. For changing details such as prices, availability and product features, check the official provider before acting.

Privacy and good judgement

What should I avoid putting into a prompt?

Do not paste passwords, access codes, full payment details or confidential information into a public AI tool. Use fictional examples when practising. Before uploading personal or workplace information, check permission, your organisation’s rules and the tool’s data settings. Removing a name alone may not make a document anonymous.

Can I use AI for work or studying?

That depends on your employer, institution and the task. Check the relevant rules first. AI may help you practise a skill or understand an explanation, but you remain responsible for what you submit or share. Keep your own reasoning and verify the output; follow any required acknowledgement rules.

How much should I trust its advice?

Use it to explore questions, not as your only authority for important decisions. Check the evidence and consider what could happen if it is wrong. For decisions about health, legal rights or finances, use reliable official information and appropriate qualified advice.
