OpenAI starts measuring whether AI helps with real-life tasks

A new benchmark looks beyond clever answers to test how well AI handles childcare searches, budgets and everyday administration.

OpenAI has introduced LifeVal, a benchmark designed to measure whether AI can help people complete practical everyday tasks rather than simply answer questions.

The company built the evaluation using established time-use studies and a new survey of 3,995 people. Its tasks cover areas such as finding childcare, household administration, personal finances, education, shopping and access to government services. LifeVal also tests whether models can use browsers, computers and connected tools to move a task forward, while still leaving important choices with the user.

OpenAI says its latest models scored highly on several examples, including comparing local schools and organising community volunteers. These are company-produced evaluation results, so they should be treated as evidence of OpenAI’s testing direction rather than a guarantee that every real task will work reliably.

The research points towards AI assistants being judged more on useful outcomes. People should still check important decisions and be careful with personal, financial or health information.

Why this matters

For everyday users and small businesses, this is a more useful measure of progress than a model answering trivia. It focuses attention on whether AI can help organise real work, follow instructions and pause when a person needs to make the final decision.
