Google has launched a self-paced AI certificate designed for healthcare professionals and developed by clinicians at the company. Google says the programme can be completed in under five hours and is organised into four courses covering AI foundations, patient communication, routine administration and ongoing professional learning.
The examples are practical rather than clinical: reviewing long email threads, organising schedules, turning complex information into clearer patient-friendly explanations, summarising research and preparing presentations. Google says the curriculum keeps clinical judgement, safety and privacy central, and offers eligible learners up to 5.0 AMA continuing education credits. Several US medical and nursing institutions are already offering the training to staff or students.
The announcement presents AI as support for non-clinical work rather than a substitute for professional decision-making. Availability of the course does not remove the need to follow employer policies and local rules on confidential patient information.
Why this matters
This is a useful example of AI training being built around real tasks instead of broad theory. Small healthcare practices and other regulated businesses can copy the approach: start with low-risk administration, teach people how to check outputs, and keep sensitive data out of unapproved tools.
