This week in AI: less copying, more getting things done

Weekly AI roundup · Published 2026-10-30

Ever asked AI to help with a task, then spent ages moving the answer into another app? That extra bit of admin can be the most frustrating part.

This week's AI announcements, from 26 to 29 October 2026, have something in common: they're about making the step from an answer to a usable result a little shorter. Here are four developments worth knowing about, without the technical jargon. Some features depend on your plan, device or rollout, so check what's available before changing how you work.

Gemini can now edit the files it helps you create

On 29 October, Google announced that people can generate, preview and edit files inside the Gemini app rather than having to leave the conversation to make every change. That includes documents, spreadsheets, presentations and PDFs. You can open a file in a larger view, type your own edits or highlight an area and ask Gemini to change it.

Google says PDF preview and editing work on web and mobile, while the other supported file types are web-only for now. The company says the feature is available to users wherever the Gemini app is supported.

Why this matters: Imagine putting together a simple appointment tracker, a price list or a presentation for your business. Instead of copying the first draft back and forth, you can improve it while looking at the file. Try it with a non-sensitive example first, and check any figures, formulas and formatting before sharing.

Shopify is bringing more shop tasks into AI chats

Shopify's Fall '26 Edition, announced on 28 October, includes connectors for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. Shopify says participating merchants can use supported assistants to work with products, stock, orders and store performance without constantly switching screens.

It also announced a more capable Sidekick assistant for its own admin, including research, calculations and preparing changes for the shop owner to approve. Some features, such as the new Canvas store-design view, are in early access.

Why this matters: If you run an online shop, think about checking which products are running low or preparing a product update from the assistant you already know. The useful part is less menu-hunting, not handing over the keys. Check which connections are available in your Shopify account, keep permissions limited and review prices, stock figures and suggested changes before approving them.

ChatGPT can now connect to iCloud Mail and Calendar

OpenAI's release notes dated 27 October say iCloud users can connect their Mail and Calendar accounts to ChatGPT. That means asking it to find an email, catch up on messages, check what's in your diary or update a calendar event. OpenAI says the connections are available across ChatGPT plans on the web, desktop and iOS.

There's an important distinction: connecting iCloud Mail does not automatically give ChatGPT access to other email accounts that happen to appear in Apple's Mail app.

Why this matters: Think of finding a client's booking email or checking tomorrow's appointments without searching through everything yourself. Start with a straightforward question, check which account you've connected and review any calendar changes carefully. Access to personal information deserves a little thought, even when the convenience sounds lovely.

OpenAI's new Terra model focuses on practical computer work

On 26 October, OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a model built for tasks involving writing, understanding images and using computer interfaces. Its examples include completing forms and working with business documents. OpenAI reports that Terra is faster and more efficient than earlier models in its own tests; those are company evaluations, not a promise about every real-world task.

Terra is rolling out in ChatGPT Work and Codex for eligible paid plans, with access also available to developers. It is not something every person using the standard free chat will automatically see.

Why this matters: For a small business, the interesting possibility is less retyping: picture preparing information from supplier invoices or organising a repetitive admin task, where the tools you use support it. Begin with a low-risk job, check each result and never assume an AI has correctly completed a payment, form or record without looking for yourself.
